City Beckons Rural Kansas Nurses

For enhancement of their nursing skills, the nurses of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses, now have the option of doing so at the University of Kansan, Medical Center. The nurses working in rural hospitals now have a chance, of working at the city hospital, through their programs; but for small assignments. The program is beneficial for both the nurses and the hospital as the nurses get to work with medical cases which they might not have seen before while the center is able to up its count with regard to nurses.

As of now, only the Ulysses hospital, having 35 beds, has enrolled into this program. From this hospital, 12 of the26 nurses showed interest in participating in this program. Interestingly, quite a few nurses have already visited the center where they rotate their work shift of 8 hours and 12 hours for about 3 to 4 days. This opportunity got, a 35-year old Ulysses nurse, extremely excited. She was assigned to the hematology department, and had the opportunity to work with patients of liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants. These nurses stay at the medical center and fly to Kansas City on the medical center's outreach plane.

The administrator of the Bob Wilson Hospital feels that this program has unlimited potential for the skill enhancement of nursing staff in all the surrounding hospitals. This program gives a lot of experience to the nurses at the tertiary care level as they get to work with high end equipments.

According to him, this is beneficial to their entire nursing staff that will also have access to that knowledge through nurses who participate, and will be more in tuned with state of the art care which improves patient care.
